Researching Prosocial Design with Decentralized Social Platforms
October 21, 2026

Large social media platforms hold power over data and resources, making independent research on prosocial design interventions difficult. Decentralized social platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky, however, create an opportunity for independent research. Because of the open web components of decentralization, researchers can customize feeds and structure features to study a variety of research questions without the permissions of a centralized authority.
Join us for a talk and conversation with Will Schulz, postdoc at NYU’s Center for Social Media, AI, and Politics, to explore how decentralization opens the door to studying prosocial design solutions. Like all PDN Prosocial Design Research Workshops, this informal, one-hour, interactive online session includes a presentation, Q&A with constructive feedback, and breakout groups to dig deeper and build connections.
